Maintaining a fear of failure has been crucial in my career. This fear drives me to do everything within reason to secure a win, especially in cases with slim odds. The key is putting in immense work, never taking shortcuts, and outworking the opposition to level the playing field. Over-preparation is essential; the more thorough your preparation, the more confidently you can navigate unexpected courtroom situations.
What was your experience like starting your own law firm at a young age, and what prompted you to venture out on your own?
I was on the verge of becoming a partner at a well-respected firm when my mentor advised me to strike out on my own to establish my own identity and reputation. Despite initial apprehension, I took the leap, initially renting office space from my mentor before fully branching out. Overcoming fears of failure and self-doubt was crucial, and I learned the value of showing unwavering confidence to clients, even in challenging situations.
For young criminal defense lawyers preparing for their first trials, what preparation techniques or rituals do you recommend to build genuine confidence under intense pressure?
In today's legal landscape, knowing the material thoroughly is paramount. Avoid the distractions of social media and focus on deep understanding and preparation. For my own first trial, I was over-prepared due to fear, but this preparation ultimately eradicated my physical symptoms of stress. Embrace hard work, disregard superficial success metrics, and prioritize thorough knowledge and readiness for trial situations.
What was the best concert you've ever attended, considering your passion for music?
Among many, a standout concert for me was Alex Chilton of Big Star performing in a small club. His intimate interaction with the audience, such as honoring song requests from fans in the restroom, made it a memorable experience for me as a music enthusiast.
